CHENNAI, DEC 22: Janata Dal (Secular) on Wednesday said its lone MLA in Tamil Nadu Assembly, B Venkataswamy, had been suspended from the party for anti-party activities.

Venkataswamy had recently quit the party and announced his intention of joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee visit here on December 26 to participate in the BJP’s executive committee and national council meeting.

Party state president G A Vadivelu told reporters here that Venkataswamy should now resign his membership of the Assembly since he won the Hosur assembly seat on the Janata Dal symbol.

If Venkataswamy failed to resign, he should be declared an Independent MLA and a letter in this connection was being sent to the Assembly Speaker, he said.

Vadivelu said a 10-day rally, aimed at reviving the party and making its activities more vigorous, would commence from here on January 1. The rally, which would focus on people’s issues, would be inaugurated here by Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) president G K Moopanar.

The rally would culminate at Kanyakumari on January 10, where former prime minister H D Deve gowda would participate in a function, he added.

Vadivelu also criticised the BJP-led government for not adhering to its promise of getting the Women’s Reservation Bill passed during the Winter Session of Parliament, which ends today.
