Hoshiarpur, October 23: Mortal remains of legendary footballer Jarnail Singh, who died in Vancouver (Canada) last week, were consigned to flames with full state honours in his native village Panama, 48 kms from here on Sunday.

His son Harshmohan Singh, who accompanied the body from Canada, lit the pyre in the presence of a large number of sportsmen and people of the area.Earlier a police contingent reversed its arms and fired in the air as a mark of respect to the former Olympian, who scored the winning goal for India in the 1962 Asian Games in the gold-winning performance.

Punjab Minister of State for Civil Supplies Sohan Singh Thandal laid a wreath on behalf of the Punjab government.

A large number of sportsmen, politicians and relatives visited his house in the village to pay rich tributes to the Olympian, who captained India for a long time and took Mohan Bagan to great heights in his decade long association with the club.
