CHENNAI, DECEMBER 28: Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Arun Jaitley on Monday called for a review of the judicial set up. He was for introduction of a system on the lines of the National Judicial Commission.
Delivering the 26th Frank Moraes Memorial Lecture on Perils of Today and Plans for Tomorrow8217; organised by the United Writers8217; Association UWA, he said the country had tried several ways of appointing judges. This process should be reconsidered he said pointing out that the other wings of the governing machinery should also be included in the process.
Even though we have a strong and independent judiciary, the problem of delay in delivering justice is posing a problem. He said that a case goes for several reviews and too many appeals. There is delay in appointment of judges and there is also an imperative need for more courts. Judicial privacy also needs to be reviewed, he said.
The Minister expressed concern over several aspects of the Constitution which gave room forgrave misuse. The main among them that needed to be reviewed were the Anti-Defection Law, Article 356 and Centre-State relations in connection with the financial power of the State must be relooked at, he said.
One of the major problems confronting India was the lack of societal consciousness towards environmental protection. 8220;New Delhi is the fourth most polluted city in the world and 45 per cent of its young children suffer from asthma8221;, Jaitley said adding that vehicular emission was a major pollution source.
