Michael Jackson failed to meet a court-imposed deadline for his arrival in court for his sex abuse trial on Thursday, risking forfeiture of his 3 million bail and possible jail.
Jackson turned up a few minutes after the deadline set by the judge, who had given him one hour to return to court after the singer failed to appear at the start of proceedings on what was expected to be the most crucial day of the trial8212;testimony by his young accuser.
It was not immediately clear what action the Santa Barbara County Judge Rodney Melville would take against Jackson.
Melville issued a warrant for the entertainer8217;s arrest after noticing at the start of Thursday8217;s proceedings that Jackson was not present at the defence table.
Jackson8217;s lawyer said his client had been taken to a hospital with 8216;8216;a serious back problem8217;8217;, adding, 8216;8216;It8217;s my understanding that he8217;s on his way in.8217;8217; But Melville rejected that explanation.
A spokeswoman at the Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital confirmed that Jackson walked into the emergency room at about 8 a.m., and left about 45 minutes later. She declined to offer further details of his visit.
8216;8216;Because of privacy laws, I would not be able to comment on why Michael Jackson was there or what was done for him,8217;8217; she said.
It was Jackson8217;s second known visit to a hospital since trial proceedings began. Jury selection was suspended for a week last month after the entertainer was hospitalised for what doctors described as a 8216;8216;flu-like illness with some vomiting8217;8217;. 8212;Reuters
