For about 15 years, Jayanti Vasava and his nephew Harshad Vasava didn8217;t talk to each other over a family dispute. They patched up a couple of years ago but now they are locked in another fight8212;this time in the poll arena.
While Jayanti, 53, is debuting from the Rajpipla constituency on a Congress ticket, his nephew and opponent Harshad is the BJP8217;s sitting MLA. While the uncle is a known philanthropist in the region, 37-year-old Harshad faces a string of corruption charges and is not too popular among his party colleagues.
While both the Vasavas are farmers, Jayanti has declared assets over Rs 1.64 crore. He owns gold jewellery worth Rs 8. 5 lakh, banks deposits worth Rs 7 lakh and insurance policies worth Rs 11 lakh. Though Harshad reports just Rs 3 lakh in cash as assets, his critics, even those in the BJP like MP Mansukh Vasava, have openly talked about the corruption charges against him. 8220;Jayantibhai is my mother8217;s cousin,8221; said Harshad. 8220;It is natural for us to visit each other.8221;
When Jayanti was asked about his relationship with Harshad, he refused to comment. He also played down the corruption charges against his nephew. Internal matters?
