The Indian Navy8217;s INS Beas and the Army8217;s Grenadiers Regiment on Friday entered into an affiliation agreement to carry out future joint operations and also bring about greater interaction and cooperation between the two services.
With the affiliation formalities complete, INS Beas has become the Navy8217;s 11th ship that has been associated with a particular Army battalion. 8220;With modern methods of warfare evolving, the time has come to integrate our forces and this is just another process in that direction,8221; said Lt General SS Dhillon, Colonel of The Grenadiers.
The amalgamation of The Grenadiers with INS Beas also means that apart from sharing operational space, the two units will exchange visits of officers on each other8217;s bases and thus promote officers8217; camaraderie.
8220;It8217;s only when they get to know each other that they will understand each other8217;s operational requirements and will be able to respond quickly to each other8217;s operational needs,8221; said a Ministry of Defence MoS spokesperson after the affiliation ceremony. 8220;With new technologies coming in, there8217;s no individual force that can stand on its own and, therefore, it8217;s a requirement to bring forces together,8221; said Rear Admiral Anil Chopra, Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet.
The INS Beas, with a displacement of 3,850 tons at sea, is amongst the latest guided missile frigate that was commissioned in the year 2005 and belongs to the INS Brahmaputra Class. The Grenadiers, however, is one of the oldest battle regiments of India with 25 established battalions across the country. It also happens to have won the maximum number of Param Vir Chakras, India8217;s highest military honour.
Examples of other such affiliations include combinations like the INS Viraat and the Garhwal Regiment and INS Mumbai and the Maratha Light Infantry.
