
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has ordered a judicial inquiry by a sitting Guwahati High Court judge into the clash between adivasi protesters and local people in Guwahati on Saturday.
Gogoi told reporters that the inquiry would probe the circumstances leading to the clash and all other related matters. The report will be submitted within two to three months.
However, the investigating judge is yet to be named.
Over 5000 All Assam Adivasi Students Association AAASA demonstrators went on the rampage in the Beltola-Dispur area damaging scores of private and public vehicles besides ransacking and looting shops demanding scheduled tribe status for the adivasis in Assam.
The public retaliated and clashed with the demonstrators armed with bows and sticks leaving one dead and nearly 300 injured.
Curfew was clamped in the area and withdrawn from 5 pm on Sunday.
