HYDERABAD, July 29: India could meet the increase in demand for nuclear power and withstand the denial of technology by successfully developing the required capabilities indigenously, Atomic Energy Commission AEC chairman R Chidambaram asserted today.
India is one of the few countries in the world that had comprehensive capability and knowledge in building reactors. In a couple of years, nuclear technology would flow from Asian countries to the West and not vice-versa.
The ISO 9001 certificate awarded to the Nuclear Power Corporation NPC for its design and quality was an indication, he said.
Presiding over the golden jubilee celebrations of Atomic Minerals Division AMD here, Chidambaram observed that there was a dip in demand for nuclear power in the Western countries and hence chances of building new reactors in those countries were bleak.
Chidambaram called for synergy between all the national laboratories and universities in the country to fight sanctions and technology rejections.8220;Self-reliance means developing immunity against technology denials,8221; he said.
The chief guest, Governor C Rangarajan, stressed the need for strengthening scientific and technological institutions to sustain the high rate of economic growth.
