MUMBAI, APRIL 19: Indian Navy all but sank due to their prodigality. They came through 4-3 via the tie-breaker against Central Bank to move into the semi-finals of the Punjab Maharashtra Bank sponsored Guru Nanak Devji Hockey tournament at the Khalsa Gymkhana.
Also making the semi-final were RCF who defeated Central Railway 2-1.
Navy had all the play but no goals to show for. Some credit of keeping Navy goalless throughout 70 minutes should be on Central Bank goalkeeper Douglas Rodricks, who made two breathtaking saves.
On both the occasions, it was Navy left-back James Peter Ekka who was denied a goal 8212; Douglas batting away a lob like a football goalkeeper and thrusting his right leg out and deflecting a rasping hit from a penalty corner.
Navy8217;s domination of their rivals was complete with Central Bank getting only one opportunity 8212; Wendell Gomes missing a swing at the top of the area in the second half.
Besides the Ekka efforts, Navy came closest to scoring from their second penalty corner whenAvtar Singh8217;s hit smashed against the post.
In the tie-breaker, Harbans Singh Bisht, MJP Manova, Ranjit Singh and Avtar Singh converted while Vivek D8217;Souza, Saby Naronha and Gilbert Buthelo scoring for Central Bank.
The second match saw one great goal with Mahesh Bagade of RCF deflecting a waist high ball from Hemant Dabak to break the 50-minute deadlock against Central Railway. Railway responded quickly 8212; eight minutes later Rishi Patel turned the ball in after the RCF goalkeeper was beaten.
But Hemant put the issue beyond the railwaymen in the 64th minute. He followed the rebound after the ball had deflected off the goalkeeper to make it safe for RCF.
