India vs England: Security and charity

There is mad media scramble for the only a photo opportunity with the two captains -- Dhoni and Pietersen.

Former England captain Michael Atherton is in splits at the pre-series trophy launch. It’s only a photo opportunity with the two captains — MS Dhoni and Kevin Pietersen — holding the silverware and displaying broad smiles. But for that one frame, or that short television clip, there is mad media scramble.

The unprecedented post-26/11 security has meant that only a few now venture towards the team hotel, and such is the extra security cover that even net sessions have to be filmed without access to ground zero. For the last two days, cameras have been busy sitting in the stands to capture the perfect frame — a commando in the foreground with the cricketers behind him. The press conferences, too, have been dominated with questions about security.

Perhaps it was the situation — where chasing the team bus for a mood-shot isn’t a viable option anymore — that prompted such a rush for the usually ignored trophy launch. Despite the toe-crushing crowd, he looks at the funny side of things from the sidelines of a Test series that has, due to the circumstances, assumed historic status.

But the controversies still haven’t died down. Ever since England have landed in India, there is a big divide about the real intentions of the visitors returning to the country within days of the terror strike. While many agree it’s a brave move, there are suggestions that it’s only about the money and the IPL next year.

A fresh debate was kicked up on Thursday. Now that the England players have announced that they will donate half their match earnings to the Mumbai terror victims, Dhoni was asked uncomfortable questions about India’s charity plans. “Actions speak louder than words. We will do what we want to,” Dhoni told the packed room before disappearing behind the security curtain.
