A Day after India summoned the Australian High Commissioner to express its concern over Haneef Mohamed, it has taken up with the British Government the issue of Sabeel Ahmed not yet getting consular access. Ahmed, a doctor from Bangalore picked up from Liverpool on June 30, has been charged in connection with the foiled terror plots in UK.

Concerned over the delay, the Indian High Commission in London had taken up the matter with the British Foreign Office. Sources in the Ministry of External Affairs said the Indian High Commission in London sent a note verbale to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office FCO on the issue on Wednesday.

In a related development, Australia has approached India for assistance in investigations into Haneef8217;s alleged role in the failed UK terror plot. The Union Home Ministry has received a Letter Rogatory to this effect, official sources said. With this, the Centre is expected to approach the Karnataka Government to provide details of inquiries conducted by the Karnataka Police to the Australian Federal Police AFP. 8220;The view here is that we should cooperate with Australia since India believes that terrorism is a global threat,8221; an official said. The Government, however, has not received a request for assistance from the UK, official sources said.

The Karnataka Police had begun inquiries about Haneef8217;s background and his associates soon after receiving news of his detention in Australia. But the police there have maintained that they were conducting 8220;a suo motu verification8221; into his antecedents.

Senior officers have also been pointing out that they were yet to receive concrete information on the terror plot from Australia and the UK.
