India is planning to open its third research station in Antarctica and hopes to get the necessary environmental clearance in this regard during the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting ATCM that the country is hosting later this month.
India already has a permanent base in Antarctica8212;Maitri8212;functioning since 1988-89. India8217;s first base Dakshin Gangotri has submerged into ice and is useless.
The plan had met with opposition from some countries, which raised environmental concerns. However, India today said it was hopeful of getting the clearance from the ATCM. 8220;We are equally concerned about maintaining the pristine environment of Antarctica. We follow very high standards of environmental behaviour in that region. Our new station is not going to damage the environment at all,8221; Minister of Science and Technology Kapil Sibal said on the eve of Earth Day.
