MUZAFFARPUR: Newcomer Nilotpal Das from Calcutta gave a sterling display to shock sixth seeded International Master and overnight joint leader Ravi Hedge of Banks Sports Board BSB in the 35th National A8217; Chess Championship here today.
Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua of Bengal maintained his lead with a score of 2.5 points. Hedge, Pravin Thipsay, Das, Konguvel and Lanka Ravi are sharing the second position with two points each.
Adopting the semi-Slav defence with black pieces, Das worked out a fine attack against the short-castled king of Hegde, whose queen was trapped on the 21st move. He called it quits after eight more moves.

GUWAHATI: The sixth National Women8217;s Football Championships will be held in Calcutta from April 30. The preliminary matches will be conducted in two clusters from April 30 to May 5.
The cluster teams have been divided into four groups and the winners of each group will advance to the quarter-finals. Last year8217;s semi-finalists have been seeded directly into the quarter-final league. While the defending champions Bengal and Kerala are in Cluster Q of the quarter-final league, runners-up Manipur and Punjab are in Cluster P. The final will be played on May 15.
Group A: Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh. Group B: Goa, Rajasthan, Tripura. Group C: Maharashtra, Assam, Bihar. Group D: Haryana, Orissa.
