Malik is IHF observer for Sydney
CHANDIGARH: The Indian Hockey Federation has appointed Mahinder Singh Malik as observer for the Olympic Games to be held from September 15 to October 1. Malik, who is also the president of the Haryana Hockey Association and general secretary of the Haryana Olympic Association was also the manager of the Indian hockey team which won the gold in Asian Games at Bangkok in 1998. India had won the gold after a gap of 32 years.

Foreign players for badminton tourney
BANGALORE: Top badminton players from the State and two juniors from England will be participating in the three-day Khodays Senior State Ranking Tournament starting here on Friday.
The tournament has attracted around 50 players in men8217;s singles, 30 in men8217;s doubles, 12 in women singles, 16 in veteran singles and 14 in veteran doubles. As many as 117 matches will be played in the Rs 50,000 prize money tournament.
Gautam Samarth stuns top seed
PONDICHERRY: Fourth seeded Gautam Samarth of Maharashtra scalped top seed Kesava Narasimhan to set up a title clash with Tamil Nadu8217;s N Vijay Sundar Prasanth in the under-14 section in the All-India Ranking Tennis Tournament 2000 here on Thursday.
In the semi-finals, Gautam defeated his statemate in straight sets 7-5, 6-1. Earlier, second seeded Vijay Sundar Prasanth got the better of Ajay Selvaraj 6-4, 7-5.
In the girls under-14 quarter-finals, top seed Sharanya Pattabi of Tamil Nadu thrashed unseeded Kanimozhi TN 6-0, 6-0. Second seed Fatima Baig of Tamil Nadu suffered a shock defeat, going down to unseeded Varsha Shivshankar of Tamil Nadu, 3-6, 3-6 RPT 3-6, 3-6.
