Sikdar receives MVP Award

New Delhi: Jyotirmoyee Sikdar, who won two gold medals and a silver for India at the 13th Asian Games at Bangkok, was tonight awarded the Samsung Most Valued Performance Award.

Sikdar was chosen for the award for being a multiple gold medallist, for displaying consistency in performance and for her fighting spirit.A special award was given to 20-year-old boxer Dingko Singh, who beat World Cup silver medallist Sontaya Wongprates to win India its first boxing gold in 16 years.

V8217;ball Nationals

Calcutta: The 47th Senior National Volleyball Championships will begin at Chinsurah, a town in Hooghly District tomorrow. The tournament, for men and women, will be an eight-day event played under the group league format.In the men8217;s event, reigning champions Kerala, runners-up Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Railways, Bengal, Services, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana will vie for six quarter-final slots in the upper group. On the distaffside, last year semi-finalists Railways, Bengal, Punjab and Tamil Nadu have a direct entry into the quarters.

US team for India

Chandigarh: Jennie Gilbert will lead a 14-member Indo-Cal Hockey Club of California in the 1999 Surjit Memorial Women8217;s hockey tournament to be held in January at Burlton Park, Jalandhar. A number of the team members have represented the US in various international hockey tournaments including Pan-American, World Cup and Atlanta Olympic Games. The team would also play a number of Test8217; matches with local teams before returning to the US.State team PUNE: Maharashtra Amateur Gymnastic Association MAGA announced the state team for the Senior National gymnastic championship scheduled to be held at Rajasthan from January 15 to 19, next year.

AHMEDABAD: Vigil Pujara and Anoori Shah posted their second straight wins in the second round of the Under-9 boys and girls categories respectively on the second day of the All India Children8217;s Chess Championship. In the boys8217; under-9 category, second seed Rahul Sangma of Bihar won easily against M Akash.
