Umpires for I-Cup finals

CALCUTTA: S Venkatraghavan, SK Bansal, Dave Orchard and Steve Dunne have been named as the umpires for the best-of-three finals of the Independence Cup Cricket Tournament.

India8217;s Venkatraghavan and New Zealand8217;s Dunne will oficiate as the umpires for the first final of the Independence Cup at Mohali on May 24, Dave Orchard will be the third umpire for the match.

Steve Dunne and Dave Orchard will be the umpires for the second final in Calcutta on May 27 with Bansal as the third umpire.

The third final, to be played in Calcutta only if the first two fail to produce results, will have Venkatraghavan and Orchard as the field umpires with Dunne being the third umpire.

Captains confirm

CALCUTTA: Sixteen former Indian cricket captains have already confirmed their presence for the second and third finals of the Independence Cup here on May 27 and 28. However, Sachin Tendulkar is yet to indicate whether he will be present or not.

The captains who have confirmed: Lala Amarnath, Vijay Hazare, Polly Umrigar, Hemu Adhikari, Pankaj Roy, GS Ramchand, Nari Contractor, Chandu Borde, Ajit Wadekar, S Venkataraghavan, Sunil Gavaskar, Bishen Singh Bedi, Kapil Dev, Ravi Shastri, Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Mohammad Azharuddin.

Kahlon third

CHENNAI: India8217;s scratch handicapper, Harmeet Kahlon of Oil India Limited finished a creditable third in the 10th Panasonic Saujana Amateur Open Golf Championship at Palm Course in Malaysia from a strong field of over 150 golfers drawn from various countries.

According to a fax message from Dilip Thomas, captain of the four-member Indian team, Kahlon tallied 227 for third place in the individual category, followed by Amit Luthra of Delhi a two handicapper for the fourth spot with a total of 228. Kahlon and Luthra had to be satisfied with the silver medal in the team event with a tally of 304 points after two rounds.

Cricket tour off

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Cricket Board PCB has called off a tour of the country by the Indian women8217;s cricket team, just a day before they were scheduled to leave, citing non-availability of grounds in Pakistan as the reason.

The Pakistan team8217;s skipper, Shaiza Saeed Khan has blamed the PCB chief Majid Khan for his 8220;absolute indifference8221; towards their request for grounds, the state-owned Associated Press of Pakistan reported.

MPT qualify

MARGAO: MPT defeated Sesa Goa 2-0 to qualify into the next stage of the West Zone Kalyani Black Label Federation Cup at Nehru Stadium. Both the goals came in the second half through Vishant Pednekar and Salvador D8217;Cruz.
