MUMBAI: The six-member Indian women8217;s team emerged triumphant by winning the championship of the Bridge Federation of Asia, Africa and the Middle East, which ended at Colombo on Friday. The National squad defeated South Africa in the semi-final before vanquishing Egypt in the final to regain the Vinodini Trophy after a decade.
The team also qualified to represent the zone in the Venice Cup Championship to be held later in Bermuda.
THE SQUAD: Hema Deora, Pramilla Shivdasani, Geeta Lakhani, Bimal Sicka all Mumbai, S Krishnan and P Diwakaran both Chennai.
John, Surindra shine
PUNE: The coxless pair of the Indian rowing team, John Xavier of Madras Sappers and Surindra Singh of Bengal Sappers, have bagged bronze medal in the 8th Asian Rowing Championship which concluded near Tokyo, Japan, yesterday, according to reports reaching here.
The duo, in this process, also bettered their timing so as to qualify for the 2000 Sydney Olympics. This is for the firsttime that Indian rowing team will get the chance to participate in the Olympics.

Open pair silver: Birbal Singh, Jagjit Singh, Trilcochan Singh and Inderpal Singh. Coxless Eight silver: RP Shelke, Binu Kurien, Kasam Khan, Pappi Singh, Birbal Singh, Jagjit Singh. Cueists third
DUBAI: Malaysia beat Pakistan 3-2 to lift the Emirates International Snooker Championship title here last night. Malaysia took home a magnificent trophy and a cheque for US 3,000 and a further 500 for the high break of 109 by Sam Chong. Runners-up Pakistan got a cheque for 2000 while third-placed India won 1,500.
BCCI selections
MUMBAI: The National and A squads for the forthcoming tours of Australia and the West Indies will be picked by the Board ofControl for Cricket in India BCCI selectors during the course of the third and final India-New Zealand Test at Ahmedabad from Oct 29-Nov 2.
The India team led by Sachin Tendulkar will leave for its 76-day tour of Australia within a week of the conclusion of the five-match limited overs series against New Zealand team to play a three-Test series against the hosts. The India A team will depart earlier to the Caribbean Islands to play two four-day Tests8217; and three One-Day Internationals8217; against their West Indies counterparts.
