There is some alarming news on e-waste, waste generated out of junked computers. A report released on Saturday found that dumping and recycling of this hazardous waste is rampant in Chennai and Mumbai. And it is not just waste from within the country but imported waste that is flooding the recycling market.

These are findings of a report done by a Delhi-based NGO Toxics Links and is a follow-up of its research on Delhi.

Officially, the Government is in denial mode on such waste coming into India. However, they are beginning to get concerned and for the first time are holding an international meeting on e-waste on March 15 with all the stake-holders.

It’s a matter of concern as e-waste contains over 1,000 substances and chemicals, many of which are toxic and which may create problems for those exposed directly in recycling units and also for the environment.

It contains lead in glass monitors, cadmium in chips and cathode ray tubes, PVC in cables and other harmful substances. All these are either cancer-causing or can severe respiratory ailments if inhaled for sustained periods.

Though the exact quantum of this waste is not known, there are indicators that it is on the rise and India will be the prime destination in the coming years.
