MUMBAI, SEPT 7: The Famous Grouse Indian rugby team returned from the Singer Sri Lanka Rugby Sevens Tournament without any laurels but rich in experience. A total of 16 teams participated in this event and India was in Pool B along with Hong Kong, Germany and China.
India lost 14-21 in the semi-finals of the Bowl Championships to a combined team, the International Barbarians. Thailand eventually won the Bowl championships.
According to captain Chaitanya Sinh, “India,s performances were lauded for the spirit and determination in the face of adversity by all. The young team, which had five of its players under the age of 21, played with the utmost bravery and walked off every match with their heads held high.”
In Pool B, India first played Hong Kong and lost 35-0. Germany then beat India 49-0 and China beat India 30-0. Said Sinh, “the young Indian team, which had five new players, performed well against the Asian giants and held their own, despite the scorelines. The top two teams of this pool were Hongkong and Germany.”
From the other pools, South Korea, Arabian Gulf, Chinese Taipei, Sri Lanka, Japan, and Czech Republic qualified for the Cup tournament. Chinese Taipei eventually won the tournament, beating Korea in the finals.
The Plate Championship saw China take on Malaysia. China was the eventual winner of the Plate.
