NEW DELHI, May 28: India today withdrew its defence attache from Australia and banned Australian naval ships from visiting Indian ports or operating in Indian territorial waters, and took away overflight facilities for military aircraft. This was to protest the unilateral actions of Canberra following the Pokhran nuclear tests.

A defence ministry spokesman said the measures were taken as Australian official statements and unilateral actions 8220;precluded any meaningful cooperation in defence between India and Australia in the foreseeable future8221;.

8220;Government of India has decided to withdraw its defence attache and his staff from the high commission in Canberra,8221; he said. New Delhi, he said, had also decided to decline the invitation extended to defence secretary Ajit Kumar to visit Australia and to suspend all other proposals for bilateral military cooperation.
