MUMBAI, JAN 6: Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh today justified the abrupt transfer of Director General of Police Arvind Inamdar, saying, it was in the interest of the State.
“I don`t think it was an insult or humiliation, since all the four posts of Director General of Police are equivalent. In fact, we created a special post of Advisor and Director General of Police for Inamdar,” Deshmukh said.
He declined to comment on the large scale criticism of Inamdar’s transfer, saying, there was no need for him to take note of such reports. “There is no need for me to react on the criticism since it was my own decision to shift Inamdar. How can I react to my own decision,” he added.
Stating that the decision was final and that there would be no rethinking on it, Deshmukh said so far his government has not received Inamdar’s resignation letter. On Commissioner of Police R H Mendonca’s threat to proceed on leave, Deshmukh said he has no information on his decision. “We have not received any letter fromMendonca,” he said.
Meanwhile, the BJP today condemned the transfer of Inamdar, terming it as a politically motivated move. Party spokesman Prakash Jawadekar said that the transfer orders had been issued by side-stepping all government rules. “The resignation of an honest and upright police chief like Inamdar was a slap on the face of the newly installed government”, he said adding that the transfer was bound to demoralise the police force.
Significantly, even during the Sena-BJP rule, two Chief Secretaries – Sharad Upasani and P Subramanian were asked to proceed on leave to facilitate the appointment of an official of their choice.
