In the right spirit

India8217;s sensational win in the Chennai Test must be applauded.

8226; India8217;s sensational win in the Chennai Test must be applauded. Old masters like Tendulkar and Sehwag made this memorable win possible. Nevertheless, India only won the match. England won the hearts of Indians. Their return significantly sent out the right signals about a lot of things in India post-Mumbai, 26/11. Now that the once finicky English cricketers have displayed such spirit, others 8212; teams and tourists 8212; should follow.

8226; India dramatically and decisively beat England in the Chennai Test. Victory is sweeter because India8217;s first innings performance didn8217;t inspire confidence. Virendra Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh deserve to be congratulated wholeheartedly.

Too few options

8226; This refers to C. Raja Mohan8217;s 8216;Running while waiting8217;. India8217;s response to terrorism has historically been tepid. Yet, our political leaders have historically mouthed clicheacute;s such as 8220;Pakistan is the epicentre of terrorism8221;. But nothing substantial 8212; politically or diplomatically 8212; was ever done. No wonder then that 26/11s happen to humiliate and devastate us time and again. US pressure on Pakistan on India8217;s behalf is fine. But India must rely on its own resources to make Pakistan yield. We must mobilise international opinion and apply that pressure on Pakistan. But one is doubtful to what extent and for how long that will work. Meanwhile, domestic security must be completely overhauled, beginning with the strengthening of the police.

Reprehensible idea

8226; The editorial 8216;State 038; religion8217;, couldn8217;t have made the point better. The advice to Pakistan8217;s permanent representative to the UN, Abdullah Hussain Haroon, to educate himself on Deoband and India is perfect. Under pressure, Pakistan is desperately trying to confuse the world but such tactics will not work. Even Gordon Brown8217;s statement about terror and Pakistan made that clear. Indian Muslims are vocal on the issue of terrorism, and terror affects them just as badly as it affects others. The condemnation of terrorism by Muslim clerics demonstrates the innate strength of India.

8226; I endorse your exhortation to Abdullah H. Haroon to learn facts. His invitation to the Deobandi clerics to visit Pakistan and influence terrorists is ridiculous. Killing innocent people and creating unrest is the greatest sin according to the Quran. The Deoband seminary has acquired its status because of its academic standards. It has always decried atrocity and violence. Pakistan8217;s public attempt to label it as 8220;terrorist8221; is reprehensible. Since Pakistan is an Islamic country and since there8217;s no dearth of Islamic clerics in Pakistan, why doesn8217;t Haroon ask for their services to tame the terrorists?
