8226; Baichung Bhutia should be congratulated on expressing solidarity with the people of Tibet. Bhutia has done the right thing in showing his sympathy for the Tibetan struggle to free the land from Chinese occupation. All champions of human rights and democracy should rally behind the Tibetans.

Cool earth
8226; Global warming is devastating health and the environment all over the world. There is a growing cry for energy conservation and combating the effects of climate change globally. But, very little is being done. To get people working on devising practical solutions to this problem, the WWF has initiated a climate change programme geared at fighting global warming on every scale.
Taking this initiative forward, an exciting campaign called Earth Hour was launched, with the involvement of more than a dozen cities committed to fighting the greatest threat to earth. The campaign 8212; launched in Sydney in 2007 8212; has become internationally renowned. However, only a few Indian cities are a part of it. On March 29, 2008, at 8 pm IST, millions of people the world over switched off their lights and gazed at the tranquil dark sky. This was meant to be a symbolic gesture towards reducing energy consumption levels. Every individual, working together with others, can make a positive impact on climate change. And every Indian city should learn to do its bit.

Amnesiac Congress
8226; Sonia Gandhi is wrong in saying that progress in Uttar Pradesh came to a halt after the formation of non-Congress governments. UP remained backward even when the Congress was in power in the state. In fact, the Congress president should be reminded that her party had lost due to the poor performance of successive Congress governments there.

State failure
8226; The Chhattisgarh government8217;s failure to protect its citizens from the Maoist terror and its attitude towards the Salwa Judum is shocking. Why should the people turn to the Salwa Judum for protection from the Naxalites when the state8217;s police force is supposed to provide them with security? The Supreme Court is rightly considering a PIL on the Chhattisgarh government8217;s decision. Does any government have the right to remain in power when it is unable to ensure security and thereby tackle unlawful activities? The Chhattisgarh government should have countered the Maoists with social change and conventional policing.
