Move for ban on slaughter houses defeated in MP

BHOPAL: A non-official resolution moved by ruling Congress and opposition members for ban on slaughter houses was defeated in Madhya Pradesh assembly today. The resolution was tabled by Sunil Jain (Congress) and Kamal Patel (Bharatiya Janata Party). However, when the time for voting came, Sunil Jain refrained from voting stating that he could not vote against his own party. Members of the Bahujan Samaj Party also did not take part in voting in which the resolution got twenty in its favour while 55 against it. The resolution sought total ban on slaughter houses in the state and provision of capital punishment for the convicts of cow slaughter.

AP Oppn corners treasury benches

HYDERABAD: The central developments in the wake of precariously perched numerical strengths in Lok Sabha and Telugu Desam’s perceived leaning towards BJP, found their echo in Andhra Pradesh Assembly with an opposition member cornering treasury benches on the issue. TheMajlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) member Asaduddin Owaisi questioned ruling TDP’s attempts to bail out the BJP Government and said it would prove dangerous to the secular fabric.

More armed battalions for Tripura

AGARTALA: The extremist-infested Tripura has been allotted six battalions of army, five battalions of CRPF and eight battalions of Border Security Force (BSF) to combat the insurgency problems and guard the Indo-Bangladesh border, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar told the State Assembly today. Apart from this, the state also had a total of 12,871 owned forces, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar who also holds the home portfolio, said in a reply to Ratan Lal Nath of opposition Congress.

Gujarat Appropriation Bill passed

GANDHINAGAR: Gujarat Legislative Assembly today passed the Gujarat Appropriation (vote of account) Bill, 1998, authorising the State Government to withdraw a sum of Rs 5284.06 crore from the consolidated fund of the state for the year ending March 31, 1999. The bill,which was moved by Finance Minister Vajubhai Vala, was adopted by the house by voice vote.

Recess in Assam House from today

GUWAHATI: The Assam Assembly would be in recess from tomorrow to May 3 due to holidays and various meetings of the department standing committees, assembly sources said here today. The house would meet once again on May 4. The Assembly , which commenced on March 16 with the Governor’s address, saw the presentation of the budget by CM Prafulla Kumar Mahanta on March 23.
