Dharia for mass transport project
Former chairman of the Planning Commission Mohan Dharia on Tuesday recommended that the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation PCMC should strengthen the public transport system and also implement a mass transport project such as the ring railway to curb environmental pollution.

Speaking at a seminar on the future development of Pimpri-Chinchwad organised on the occasion of the 17th foundation day of the PCMC, Dharia also suggested that proper planning in the newly merged villages is necessary and every step should be taken to curb any illegal development in these areas.

He said that the elected representatives should take every measure not to encourage development of any new slums just to expand the vote bank. Dharia observed that education should be made compulsory to all children above the age of six so that they grow up as mature citizens.

Among others who spoke on the occasion included Mayor Madhukar Pawle, assistant commissioner of police traffic Suresh Kamlakar, additional commissioner R B Konde and small scale industrialists. The industrialists should be co-opted as members of the PCMC so that they have their say in the decisions regarding development, a small scale industrialist Vidyadhar Doshi opined.
