Farmers arrested
Kolhapur: Over a hundred activists of Maharashtra Rajya Dharangrasta-Prakalpagrast Shetkari Parishad were arrested on Tuesday for attempting to release water from Terani dam in Gadhinglaj taluka protesting against the State Government8217;s rehabilitation policies.
The protesters assembled at Terni medium irrigation project and took out a morcha and forcefully attempted to release water from the dam, police said.
Meanwhile, Ajra taluka unit of the parishad has demanded protection for project-affected families in the district. The demand by the parishad comes close on the heels of the incident at Save village in Shahuwadi taluka where villagers pelted stone at cops. Seven cops including a sub-inspector were injured in the attack.
According to the parishad, the police had gone to Save to arrest two accused involved in a case of theft involving an electric pump of a Kadavi project-affected farmer. The cops were assaulted when they arrested the accused. The incident has created a rift between the 30 project-affected families who were rehabilitated at Save village and the rest of the villagers, the parishad claimed.
The parishad further demanded that work at all projects should be stalled if the Government fails to assure safety of life to project-affected families.
