
In its last Syndicate meeting, the Panjab University PU decided to introduce a course on homeland security. With this, the university will become the first to launch such a course.
After final approval from the Senate, the course will begin from the next academic session.
The one-year postgraduate diploma course will be introduced at the Centre for Defense and National Security Studies.
It is the brainchild of Professor Rakesh Dutta, coordinator of the centre, who believes the course would help country counter terrorism as its focus would be on internal security. In all, the course will have 25 seats including 15 reserved for 8216;in-service8217; candidates and the rest ten for civilians.
The course fee has not been defined as of now and the syllabus will be prepared by a special committee on the advice of experts in the field. These experts will also be invited to guide the students and provide training to them. The decision, meanwhile, has received lot of appreciation and the students believe that other colleges as well as the universities would follow suit. Anuj, a university student said: 8220;The course is a welcome move and will help many. Our country is not too equipped to tackle sudden terror attacks and there is a need to learn new technologies. The course will take care of all these things and we will have individuals more equipped to terror strikes.8221;
