Immolation bid against Prabhunath146;s acquittal

The Patna police averted immolation bids by Lalmuni Devi8217;s relatives, who had been protesting against the recent acquittal of Maharajganj8217;s JDU MP Prabhunath Singh in the 1995 murder of Devi8217;s two sons.

The Patna police on Friday averted immolation bids by Lalmuni Devi8217;s relatives, who had been protesting against the recent acquittal of Maharajganj8217;s JDU Lok Sabha MP Prabhunath Singh in the 1995 murder of Devi8217;s two sons. Devi, a key witness in the case in which Singh and six others were the main accused, had threatened self-immolation outside the Patna High Court on Friday.

Although Devi did not accompany them outside the court, her son Kishori Roy 45 and six immediate relatives along with 13 other protestors, gathered near the main gate at around 12.15 pm with paper and match boxes.

But before anything untoward happened, the police arrested seven of the protestors and chased the others away.

8220;We have arrested Lalmuni Devi8217;s son Kishori Roy and six others for attempting suicide and abetting others for the same under IPC sections,8221; Kotwali police station in-charge Mudrika Prasad told The Indian Express. Prasad said there had been no law and order problem outside the court with policemen being stationed there to avoid any immolation bid.

Lalmuni Devi8217;s son Darogo Rai was killed near an election booth in the Masrakh Assembly constituency on March 25. His brother, Rajendra Roy suffered grievous bullet injuries in the incident and died six months later.
