My neighbour owns a fleet of swanky cars that leaves very little space for parking the ageing beauty I own. Recently, he has added another exotic piece of metal to his burgeoning collection forcing my vintage vehicle to find space further away from my house.
Bitten by the bug of comparing things, I even began contemplating buying a new generation car with plush interiors and streamlined gorgeous curves. Soon, I came out of my reverie as my thoughts turned to my car. We had seen many monsoons together and it was a witness to my first date, the outings with my fiancée-turned-wife, the birth of my first child when I had proudly driven my little one on his first homeward journey from the hospital. The memories were far too precious to even entertain the thought of parting with it. So I decided to remain its faithful partner.
Once, a rare late night assignment forced me to look for parking in the remote corner. My neighbour was seeing off his guests, most probably after a gastronomical feast. Suddenly there was a commotion as one of their metallic beauties whizzed away at a maniacal speed. It annoyed me that they were resorting to these gimmicks at this unearthly hour to scare the daylights out of me. But one close look at their horrified faces and their constant shouting made me realise that the thief behind the wheel was looking for the exit point. He had not done his homework properly.
Inspired by my good neighbourly instincts, I picked up a stone suitable to my muscle power but, unlike my neighbours, I threw the stone with full force and the windscreen was smashed, forcing the thief to flee without his booty. Their mourning for the loss of the windscreen almost made me feel guilty of the act but still, with little emotion they thanked me, which almost made me feel like inviting the car stealer back to take it away and thrusting the keys and registration papers in his hand.
The next evening, I saw the effects of their car’s mandatory trip to the workshop. Not only was the windscreen sparkling but a few fashionable accessories had found their way onto the car. My parking woes remained unchanged!
