JAMMU, AUGUST 21: A Brigadier was among two army officials killed in an IED explosion in Kupwara district in Kashmir Valley today.

Though army authorities were tight lipped over the incident, sources identified the Brigadier as Brigadier B.S. Shergil, Commanding Officer of the Sector 7 Rashtriya Rifles (RR). He along with two other officers was on a recce at the foothills of Rajwar near the 7 RR Headquarters at the time. The vehicle was blown up by militants through an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). Brig Shergil, sources said, had taken over command of the Sector 7 RR just four days ago.

The other official killed was reportedly Colonel Chauhan, CO of the 21 Rashtriya Rifles. The third army official has been hospitalised.

In another incident, two jawans were killed in a rocket attack and 13 others injured at an Army transit camp near Banihal on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway at arouns 11.20 am. The jawans died on the spot. The injured soldiers were admitted to the Udhampur Military Hospital.

The two soldiers killed were identified as Naik R Subramanyam and Lance-Naik Rajender Pillay.

Elsewhere in Jammu, three Pakistani infiltrators were among five people killed during seperate militancy related incidents.
