Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Thursday expressed surprise at his Pakistani counterpart Shoaib Malik8217;s decision to bat first in the fourth one-dayer which the hosts won to clinch the five-match series in Gwalior.
8220;I was surprised to see Shoaib batting first. I had seen the wicket yesterday and we would have definitely fielded first,8221; Dhoni told reporters after winning first ODI series as the captain.
Dhoni, who guided India to their first ODI series win against Pakistan on home soil after 24 years, attributed it to team effort but admitted there were still areas of concern and room for improvement in the side.
8220;It was a team effort. We lost only one match. If bowlers could not do well today batsmen took up the responsibility. That8217;s what we are required to do8230; But we need to look into certain areas. We can still improve in fielding and death bowling,8221; he said.
8220;Pakistan is consistently doing well in the death bowling, while we have bowled well only in patches,8221; he added.
He, however, felt that 8220;it was difficult for the fast bowlers because of the dew factor8221; and added that 8220;it was not that spinners were not brilliant but the fact is that Pakistan plays spin better than any other side in the world.8221;
Dhoni said the whole team rued Sachin Tendulkar missing the seventh century, including one in Tests, this year.
8220;It8217;s very sad. The whole team is feeling sad. Most of the cricketers retire without scoring seven centuries and he has missed these many centuries. God knows when he will score next century but we hope he does it soon.
8220;It8217;s a pleasure to have him in the side. He has always taken up responsibilities,8221; he said.
On his big partnership with Yuvraj Singh in the second consecutive match, Dhoni said their batting positions facilitated it.
8220;We are batting together. He bats at number five and I am at six. We understand each other so we also help each other. We are both stroke players, so if I am lacking he scores,8221; he said.
