NEW DELHI, DECEMBER 10: Acting chairman of Hurriyat Conference Umer Farooq today said his organisation was not averse to holding talks with the Centre provided the latter accepted the organisation as a party to the dispute over Jammu and Kashmir.
8220;Hurriyat constitution talks about an alternative negotiated settlement under which a bilateral talk could be held keeping in view the stand of the third party,quot; Umer told reporters after submitting a memorandum at the United Nations headquarters here.
He, however, maintained that the final solution to the problem could be achieved only after India, Pakistan and representives of Kashmiris were involved in tripartite talks.
Regretting the decision of Jammu and Kashmir Government to extend the detention of 15 Hurriyat leaders under the Public Safety Act till September 2001, Umer said 8220;such decisions only create a greater wedge which can lead the situation from worse to worst.8221;
Earlier, a two-member delegation comprising Umer and Abdul Gani Lone submitted amemorandum to UN resident coordinator urging him to intervene in the Kashmir matter.
The memorandum also highlighted the issue of continued detention of Hurriyat leaders and said that two of the detenues were heart patients and needed immediate medical care.
