I038;B Minister P R Dasmunsi today expressed 8220;deep shock and surprise8221; at the six-year rigorous imprisonment awarded to Sanjay Dutt. He said he believes in judiciary but feels that Dutt had already 8220;suffered enough for unintentional faults8221;.

8220;As a minister, I do not want to question the judiciary, but in a civil society time has come to gauge the parameters for an unintentional fault, for which Sanjay Dutt had already suffered long enough,8221; Dasmunsi said. He said the actor8217;s 8220;contribution to society, his personal conduct and behaviour8221; is an 8220;example8221; to the young generation. All efforts must be made to approach the highest forum of judiciary to get him released, he said.

The ruling Congress, however, refrained from taking a stand on the judgment. Contacted by The Indian Express, Congress spokesman Satyavrat Chaturvedi said, 8220;I don8217;t know.8221;

Congress sources, however, said they agreed with Dasmunsi. The convicted actor8217;s father Sunil Dutt was a Congress MP and now his sister Priya is a Congress MP. Therefore, while the party felt sympathy for the family, it refrained from expressing it publicly as it could be misinterpreted in the context of the party8217;s approach to terrorism, said sources. 8220;The judgement is harsh but other legal remedies are available to him Dutt,8221; said a Congress leader.
