Hazarika choice for Bharat Ratna

Assam’s living legend in music Bhupen Hazarika will be conferred the Bharat Ratna this year. This is the unanimous voice of the Assam Assembly.

Leading the campaign for the internationally acclaimed artiste is the Opposition Asom Gana Parishad. AGP vice-president Dilip Kumar Saikia had sent a memorandum to the President and the PM last year that Hazarika be an undisputed choice for the award.

When Saikia raised the issue in the Assembly yesterday, there was no opposition. Members of the ruling Congress thumped their desks, as CM Tarun Gogoi rose, not just to support the Opposition proposal, but also announce that the government has decided to campaign for Hazarika.
