
JALANDHAR, Feb 23: Police today claimed to have busted an audacious hawala money racket arresting three accused and recovering Rs 3.55 lakh from them while another Rs 6.5 lakh were recovered from a duo of cheats offering to double the money of gullible persons.
SSP Gaurav Yadav told reporters here that Rs 3.35 lakh were recovered from a false cavity in the side door of a car intercepted at a naka on Phagwara -Jandiala road last Sunday. Three people 8212; gang leader Gurmukh Singh, Pawan Kumar and Tejinder Singh 8212; were arrested.
8220;The modus operandi of the hawala operators was simple yet audacious,8221; Yadav said, adding that Gurmukh would normally receive faxed instructions about recipients of money and they were duly paid, following which relatives of these recipients would pay Gurmukh8217;s contact man in Canada the foreign currency.
The Goraya police arrested a duo of cheats who used to defraud the people by promising to double their money.
While Rs 50,000 was recovered from their possession, another Rs 6 lakh was recovered from a room rented by them in Daleta village.
More such gangs have to come to light during their interrogation and further arrests were expected.
