CHANDIGARH, July 20: The Haryana government had cautioned farmers in the state to take precautions before descending into tube-well during the on-going rainy season.
Stating this here today, an Agriculture Department spokesman said that during the rainy season usually some poisonous gases got accumulated in tube-wells. The method to check presence of poisonous gases, he said was by slowly descending down to the bottom of a tube-well with the help of a rope, carrying a candle or a lamp.
If the candle or lamp was extinguished presence of some poisonous gas in the well was suspected and one should not descend into the well, he said.
The spokesman said that to evacuate the poisonous gas, one should hang an inverted open umbrella tied with a rope or a stick and move it up and down repeatedly.
One could also pour two buckets of lime water into the well and if the tube-well was situated in a room then one should open all doors, windows and ventilators of the room for cross-ventilation. If tubewell motor was fitted with a belt and it could be operated one should switch on the motor for half an hour, he added.
He said even after adopting above preventive measures,the poisonous gas was not not evacuated farmers should inform agriculture officers of the region immediately so that any untoward incident could be averted.
