Harveen Srao led the medal hunt as India lapped up five out of the six golds on offer in shooting. Srao won the individual top honours in women’s 10 m air pistol event with a new Games record total of 480.5 points, erasing compatriot Shweta Chowdhary’s mark of 477.5 made in 2004. Nausheen Fatima bagged the silver with 474.8 to make it a 1-2 for the Indians.The top two scores, in combination with the 369 shot by Shilpi Singh, also gave the country the team gold in the event, again with a record 1128 points. Earlier Ashok Pandit bagged the gold in 25 m centre fire pistol men’s event with a total of 570.
Golden haul in athletics
India’s ace athlete Pinki Pramanik romped home to the gold in women’s 400m with a time of 52.54 seconds. The other athletes who claimed the yellow metal were Preeja Sridharan in 10,000m and Anuradha Biswal in 100m hurdles for women and Saurabh Vij in shot put. The men’s 4X100m relay squad rounded off the good day with a golden finish.
Meanwhile, Anju Bobby George lived upto her top billing, bagging the women’s long jump gold. Anju measured 6.42 metres in her third attempt, well below her personal best of 6.83m but good enough to fetch her the gold.
Girls beat Pak in squash
Pakistan’s Carla Khan’s campaign in the squash competition ended in disappointment when she had to retire with back pain midway in her clash with Joshna Chinappa. Carla had been leading 9-4, 10-9, 1-6. Although India won the rubber 3-0 against the Pakistani girls, they had to contend with some tough fights.

India choked under pressure to go down 2-3 to Pakistan and miss out on the gold in the men’s hockey competition.
