Second seed Daniela Hantuchova was chilling out in Bali after her loss in the final to Lindsay Davenport on Sunday. So she reached the city only late last night, and after cooking up quite a storm at a promotional pasta-cooking event this morning, she made short work of her day8217;s business on court at the Sunfeast Open at the Netaji Indoor Stadium here today.
She just took 61 minutes to get past Maria Domachowska of Poland 6-2, 6-1. Ranked 11 in the WTA rankings, she used her trademark double-handed backhand to which the Polish girl had no answer.
Hantuchova and her endless legs turn as many heads on the tennis court as her game. And today she showed that she meant business as she broke her opponent as early as in the second game of the first set. And she clinched the set with a break in the eighth game when Domachowska8217;s shot hit the net.
The second set was even more one-sided with the Polish girl able to hold her serve only once in the second game. Hantuchova won the next five on-the-trot to win the set 6-1.
And then she dazzled at the post match press conference too, dressed in a burnt orange georgette sari. 8220;I wish I could wear this while playing,8221; she said, with a million dollar smile. 8220;It was a good match. Like Bali, I just tried to give my best and I guess it worked for me. The match wasn8217;t as easy as it looked. My opponent played well,8221; she said.
Hantuchova was also happy with the playing surface: 8220;It8217;s a very good surface, as good a surface provided at any European indoor tournament.8221;
Fourth seed Russian Maria Kirilenko breezed through her second round match against compatriot Ekaterina Ivanova 6-1, 6-4. Ivanova was a qualifier at this meet.
Delhi girl Tara Iyer, who got a wild card for this event, had her taste of the big league today and failed to get past the first hurdle. Playing in her first WTA meet, the teenager ran into seventh seed Flavia Penetta of Italy. In just 62 minutes Penetta disposed her off 6-2, 6-1. 8220;I was nervous. I8217;m not used to such a big crowd,8221; she said after the match. 8220;I tried to play my usual aggressive game, but today it did not work,8221; Tara added.
Eighth seed Yung-jan Chan and Tzipora Obziler made the quarter finals, while Anne Kepthavong and Maria Koryttseva entered the second round here today.
Israeli Obziler, who upset the ninth seed Russian Yaroslav Shvedova late last night, seemed a little rusty in her morning match today. But after a bit of a hiccup in the first set, she got the measure of the burly Australian Casey Dellacqua to win 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
The first set belonged to the Australian, but thereafter the Israeli gave her no chance. Taking inspiration from Lance Armstrong8217;s autobiography Back to Life, the former cadet in the Israeli army dug deep into her resources, and used her forehand to good use.
The day8217;s first second round tie saw Yung-Jan Chan make short work of Jarmila Gajdosova from Slovakia. The Chinese Taipei girl won 6-1, 6-2.
Earlier, British girl Anne Keothavong defeated Italy8217;s Sara Errani 6-4, 6-4, while Mariya Koryttseva of Ukraine put it past Monique Adamczak of Australia 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles, Alla Kudryavtseva and Vania King beat the Indian pair of Ankita Bhambri and Rushmi Chakravarthi 6-1, 6-1. The other Indian pair of Ashvarya Shrivastava and Kyra Shroff also lost, to Alberta Brianti and Mariya Koryttseva 1-6, 1-6 in 45 minutes. Sunitha Rao and Monique Adamczak defeated Dmachowska and Neha Uberoi 6-1, 6-4.
