In a classic case of how a team can go mindless just when it matters most, Bengal today committed harakiri as a dogged Gujarat bowling attack snatched an unlikely first-innings lead over Bengal by a slender three-run margin on Day III of the Ranji Trophy clash at the Eden Gardens.

In what turned out to be a gripping morning session, Gujarat speedsters Hitesh Majmudar 5/65 and Amit Singh 3/93 held their nerve, while their opponents didn8217;t, and bowled Bengal out for 326 to almost ensure two points from this match.

Brief score: Gujarat 329 038; 119/1 in 48 overs Azhar Bilakia batting 63 v Bengal 326 in 99.3 overs LR Shukla 93, Rohan Gavaskar 74; Hitesh Majmudar 5/65, Amit Singh 3/93.
