While there are clear policies on the points system for single parents or in cases of legal adoption, there is confusion over court-appointed 8220;legal guardians8221;.

Nobody seems to know whether such individuals, who have the legal guardianship of a child, get double points o points meant for only one of the parents.

Tarun Khanna name changed has been appointed legal guardian of his niece by a court mandate and is now seeking her admission in the nursery class of city schools. He is confused whether he will lose out on points given on parents8217; education and profession because he is unmarried.

8220;Legally I am the father and the mother and therefore should get double points. One school asked me to adopt the child,8221; Khanna said.

Bloom Public School Principal Ashutosh Batta said since the school is not giving extra points to both parents and only one parent will receive points for qualifications, Cases like Khanna will be treated as a normal application. 8220;A guardians on court mandate is as good as a parent,8221; he said.

But Springdales Pusa Road said a legal guardian will be given the same status as a parent. Principal Amita Wattal said. 8220;We don8217;t make any distinctions. A parent is a parent, whether or not a child is adopted,8221; she said. 8220;Such a parent will get the points meant for single parents.8221;

Ramjas School, Anand Parbat, will give double points to widowed single parents on compassionate grounds but treat divorcees and separated parents as 8220;single8221; parents and eligible for extra points.

GD Goenka, Rohini, also said a single guardian will get a single parent status.

But for Khanna, that again means losing out on almost 10 points in cases where schools are giving points for both parents8217; qualifications. Even if he gets the points for a 8220;single parent8221;, he will still not accumulate as much as a couple could.,he said.

8220;If there are 30 points for both parents, then I get 15. A single parent will get five extra points. So I will get only 20,8221; he said.

This also raises the question of whether single parents with 5 or 10 points can compete with couples in schools that are giving points to parents8217; qualification.
