VADODARA, AUG 3: The Navapura police has registered a case against the management of the Great Royal Circus 8212; currently performing in Vadodara 8212; for reportedly treating its animals cruelly. A complaint in this context was lodged by the activists of Gujarat Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals GSPCA on Monday.
According to a police spokesman, the case was registered after GSPCA activists, who witnessed the circus on its inaugural day, alleged that the area of the cages in which various endangered wild animals like lions and chimpanzees were exhibited, were smaller than specificied.
The activists also alleged that a notification issued by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment dated October 14, 1998 had put a blanket ban on exhibition of bears, monkeys, tigers, panthers, and lions even in circuses. Police, however, said that the circus management had a stay order against the said notification, the validity of which was currently being examined.
Additional commissioner of police Geetha Jauhari told Express Newsline that the legality of the case would be minutely examined, while the cruelty angle would be verified by the police in a day or two. Meanwhile, Deputy Conservator of Forest Wildlife Dr R M Patel has said that his officials would also investigate the matter separately and verify the legalities involved.
