The BJP termed “dangerous and divisive” a circular by the Union Government asking states to raise Muslim representation in government services. The circular was part of the steps being taken for the implementation of the Sachar Committee Report on the status of Muslims.

The BJP said the circular is a by-product of “the self created mess of the UPA Government pertaining to the nuclear deal with US.” Party spokesman Ravishanker Prasad said: “This is wholly unacceptable and the BJP would strongly oppose it. It would also appeal to all the right thinking Indians to protest in one voice.”

The BJP leader said only the Congress, which ruled the country for 50 years, should be blamed for the condition of Muslims. Prasad said the Congress is now using the panel for “compensatory politics”, in the aftermath of the nuclear deal with US. “Is it just fair, reasonable and in national interest at all to presume that even after 60 years of independence, a non-Muslim police officer cannot protect Muslims? Would it not openly encourage terrorists to say that all investigations against them is a farce because the investigating team did not have Muslim officers or, that they would not face trial unless there is a Muslim judge?” asked Prasad.
