8226; I have seen the report published with regard to my appointment as Advocate General of Jharkhand IE, March 4. Regretfully, I may point out that the references you have made are factually incorrect. The report says that I am listed as a member of Delhi8217;s Tees Hazari Court. That is not true. I have been enrolled with Bar Council of India in 1974, and am a Member of Delhi High Court Bar Association and Supreme Court Bar Association. I am also member of a few other tribunals and forums. I have known Shri Shibu Soren, and have been advising him in the past. You will appreciate that the appointment of the Advocate General of a State is governed by Article 165 of the Constitution of India which clearly stipulates that 8216;the Governor of each State shall appoint a person who is qualified to be appointed a Judge of the High Court to be the Advocate General of the State8217;. I fulfil this constitutional requirement.

Jharkhand redux

8226; Apropos of the recent happenings in Jharkhand and Goa, it may be useful to recall that the Narasimha Rao government, which was in the minority, bribed four MPs of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha to defeat the motion of no confidence against it in July 1993. After the trial in the special court, Justice Ajit Bharihoke convicted and sentenced former prime minister Narasimha Rao and former Central minister, Buta Singh, now governor of Bihar. Central ministers Ajit Singh, Satish Sharma, Veerappa Moily and Bhajan Lal were also involved in the scandal, but sufficient proof could not be found against them. Rao and Buta Singh got bail appealed to the high court and were acquitted on technical grounds subsequently.

8226; Please accept my sincere thanks for your paper8217;s marvellous coverage of the Jharkhand fiasco. Your editorials and other columns on this topic have been bold, honest, and worthy of a national newspaper that deserves international respect. In contrast, I found coverage of Jharkhand in other papers meek, hesitant and in some cases outright stupid.

Doesn8217;t quite work

8226; Although the author is well-intended, he is exaggerating too much 8216;Through the smokescreen8217;, IE, March 4. His argument regarding getting a stroke from various sources was okay, but he was slightly off target while talking of smoking in restaurants. While we can always ask the people around us to speak softer, their talking actually doesn8217;t hurt us. Whereas passive smoking has been proved to harm one8217;s health.
