VADODARA, Nov 15: A majority of shops and business establishments in Gorwa were closed on Sunday in protest against the Vadodara Municipal Corporation’s demolition of shops that violated the road margin norms on Friday.
The bandh call was given by Gorwa Vepari Mandal. Mandal president Vishnu Sharma told Express Newsline that the shopkeepers were protesting against the VMC’s alleged refusal to let them operate from that part of the shops that did not intrude on the road margin. Seventy members of the Mandal also went on a token hunger fast on Sunday.
The VMC demolished 120 pakka shops encroaching on the road line and 100 other sheds and shops set up in violation of building bye-laws on Friday. Sharma alleged that the VMC did not allow the shopkeepers to carry on their business from five-odd feet space that was not included in the road margin. He claimed that all the 400 shops, including groceries, hair cutting salons and STD telephone booths, observed the bandh.
Sharma said one of the most ironical part of the entire episode was that the VMC was collecting commercial tax from the shopkeepers. On Monday, the Mandal will submit memoranda to Municipal Commissioner G R Aloria and District Collector A Mukim.
