
Mir Kasi’s sentence confirmed
WASHINGTON: Pakistani citizen Mir Aimal Kasi, 33, has been sentenced to death by an American court for killing two Central Intelligence Agency men in a 1993 shooting spree in front of the CIA headquarters. Judge J Howe Brown of the Fairfax County court in Virginia near here gave the verdict yesterday as recommended by a jury of six men and six women.
Kasi’s lawyers said they would appeal the sentence. Meanwhile, the US has warned Americans abroad to attend to their safety after Kasi’s sentence.
Lebanon blast
DUBAI: Israeli Air Force warplanes bombed suspected anti-Israel militant targets in Soujud region in Lebanon after Hizbullah gunmen opened fire at Israeli infantry in Jabal Rafiah region of the security zone, reports said. Reports from Lebanon said the jets fired two missiles at Hizbullah positions near Lowaizeh village. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
Cuba embargo
CAMAGUEY: Pope John Paul today launched an outspoken attack on the US economic embargo on Cuba, calling such measures deplorable. In a letter to Cuban Youth, the pontiff said "economic embargoes… are always deplorable because they hurt the most needy." The letter was released at the end of a mass in this hot central city, celebrated against a backdrop of palm-trees and Soviet style high-rise blocks.
China executions
BEIJING: Eighty-nine criminals were executed recently in Beijing in 12 separate sessions, the Shenghuo Shibao daily reported today. It said they were executed for crimes including armed robbery, murder and aggravated assault.
