
Lankans hit back at Emerson
COLOMBO: Sri Lankan cricket chiefs have hit back at Australian umpire Ross Emerson after his comments about off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan8217;s action.
Emerson, who called the Sri Lankan slow bowler for throwing earlier this year, said in a television interview on Monday that many players around the world believed he threw.
Lanka8217;s cricket board said in a statement 8220;Emerson8217;s comments come at a time when there are serious questions about his future career as an international umpire and publicity might be just a means of getting attention.8221;
Headley doubtful
LONDON: England bowler Dean Headley is nursing a shoulder injury which looks almost certain to rule him out of next week8217;s fourth and final Test against New Zealand at the Oval. 8220;Dean has damaged his right shoulder and won8217;t be available for a week to 10 days,8221; Kent coach John Wright said.

Bergkamp shines
LONDON: Arsenal made it two wins out of two when a typically composed finish by Dutch football star Dennis Bergkamp gave them a 2-1 victory at Derby County in the English Premiership.
Frenchman Emanuel Petit blasted Arsene Wenger8217;s side ahead only for Rory Delap to produce a shock equaliser for the home side. But two minutes after half-time, Bergkamp controlled a pass from Petit and side-footed it calmly into the net to ensure Arsenal maintained their 100 per cent start.
Roof tiles fall
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, BRUNEI: For the second time in a week, tiles fell today from the roof of a building next to the headquarters for journalists covering the Southeast Asian Games.
Witnesses said no one was hurt when hundreds of tiles cascaded down after a brief afternoon rainshower.
Police quickly cordoned off the area, where hundreds of journalists have been walking back and forth daily on their way to and from coverage of the 21 sports of the 20th SEA Games. Officials also barred photographers from taking pictures.
Schumacher back
BERLIN: Two-time world Formula One champion Michael Schumacher resumed gym work today, four days after undergoing a second operation at a hospital at Geneva, Switzerland.
The 30-year-old German broke his right leg in two places when he crashed into a tyre barrier at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in mid-July.Saturday8217;s operation involved removal of the pins that were used to help mend the breaks in his leg.
SA seeks action
PARIS: South African bid chairman Irvin Khoza called on the Confederation of African Football CAF to stop sitting on the fence ahead of the decision on which country should host the 2006 World Cup soccer finals.
Buoyed by what they believe was a successful bid presentation to Worldgoverning body Fifa in Zurich earlier this week, the South African bid team hopes the CAF will soon make a decision on which African bid it supports.
