Sachin Tendulkar to lead Rest of the World squad
LONDON:
Former England captain Mike Atherton will return to the helm this summer when he leads an all-star team in the Diana, Princess of Wales memorial cricket match at Lord8217;s.

Atherton, leading MCC Marylebone Cricket Club against a so-called quot;Rest of the World XIquot; team, heads a side expected to include Australian spinner Shane Warne for the 50-over match on July 18.

The Rest of the World side will be captained by Sachin Tendulkar.

Germany, Russia off Fifa executive
DUBLIN:
The powerful German and Russian football associations were voted off the Fifa executive committee when delegates at the Uefa congress failed to back their representatives.

Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder of Germany and Viacheslav Koloskov of Russia both failed in their bid for re-election yesterday. Uefa, the European governing body, elects three representatives to Fifa8217;s executive and voted for Norwegian Per Ravn8217;Omdal, Spain8217;s Angel Maria Villar Llona and Malta8217;s increasingly influential Joseph Mifsud.

The vote went to a re-count after Omdal and Villar Llona polled 34 votes each on the first vote and Mayer-Vorfelder polled 23 8212; one short of the 24 required. Koloskov polled 19.

Brazil faces flak after defeat

Brazil woke up to a chorus of criticism after a 1-0 defeat by Argentina cruelly exposed theworld champions8217; lack of cohesion and teamwork. With less than six weeks before his opening World Cup game against Scotland, coach Mario Zagallo is scrambling for his ideal combination in mid-field and, in particular, a playmaker who can feed Ronaldo and Romario up front. Shearer kicks up row, terms it quot;accidentalquot;
LONDON:
England captain Alan Shearer, under attack for kicking Leicester8217;s Neil Lennon in the face, was reported as saying he was quot;amazedquot; how bad the incident looked. BBC Radio quoted the kick was accidental and that television footage made it look for worse than it actually was.

IAAF8217;s Olympic request turned down
SYDNEY:
International Amateur Athletics Federation IAAF president Primo Nebiolo said he was disappointed over the ticket issue but was confident that a deal could be struck with the International Olympic Committee IOC. This came after theorganisers of the Sydney Olympics turned down a request by Nebiolo for almost 20,000 free tickets and free accommodation for officials.
