KINGSTOWN, ST VINCENT: Only five members of West Indies8217; World Cup squad lived up to expectations, a leading official has said.
Mike Findlay, chairman of West Indies8217; selection panel, on Sunday said he was disappointed with the performance of the team, except for wicket-keeper batsman Ridley Jacobs and fast bowlers Courtney Walsh, Curtly Ambrose, Reon King and Mervyn Dillon.
8220;None of the other players really lived up to expectations,8221; he said.
West Indies failed to qualify for the second round of the tournament after losing to Australia in their final group game. Findlay said he was keen to see team manager Clive Lloyd8217;s report to find out what went wrong.
Jones outbattles breezes for victory
UNIONDALE: Reigning 100m world champion Marion Jones, slowed by a severe headwind, outraced a world-class 100 m field to win at the Debut meet of the fledgling track and field association.
The day8217;s gustiest conditions, a headwind of 3.8m per second, greeted Jones, who won in 11.33 seconds. That was well off her personal best of 10.65 and 1999 best of 11.06.
Jones and Chandra Sturrup of the Bahamas false started. On the third try, Sturrup burst clear and led for 50 metres before Jones took command and pulled away. Fellow American Inger Miller was second in 11.45 with Sturrup third.
Bucher wins 800 meters in Athens
ATHENS: Andre Bucher of Switzerland won the men8217;s 800 metres today at Athens Olympic Stadium in the second and final day of a Group B European Cup track meet.
Bucher finished in 1 minute, 47.37 seconds to edge Hungary8217;s Balazs Koranyi and Spain8217;s Roberto Parra.
Switzerland8217;s Michel Gigandet won the pole vault at 5.40 meters 17 feet, 8 1/2 inches, Spain8217;s Fermin Cacho took the 3,000 meters in 7:46.77, and Bulgaria8217;s Svetla Dimitrova won the women8217;s 100-meter hurdles in 12.88 seconds.
Ecuador win Canada Cup
EDMONTON ALBERTA: Ecuador won the four-team Canada Cup on Sunday, beating Canada 2-1 on Canadian defender Jason Devos8217; own goal in the 55th minute.
Ecuador finished the tournament with two victories and a tie, followed by Iran with a victory and two ties, Canada with a victory and two losses, and Guatemala with a tie and two losses.
Ecuador8217;s Ariel Graziani opened the scoring in the 17th minute, and Davide Xausa tied it in the 50th minute.
