Bitter Thon quits in a huff
GELSENKIRCHEN: German libero Olaf Thon, still bitter after being dropped during the World Cup by national coach Berti Vogts, has said he was quitting international soccer. "I spoke last week to Berti Vogts and told him I was not available," the 32-year-old Schalke 04 player told a news conference.

"Part of the reason for my decision is that Vogts is staying on as national coach. We just don’t get along." Thon lost his starting place during the World Cup to veteran Lothar Matthaeus after failing to stamp his authority during the group stage of the competition.

RIO DE JANEIRO: Brazilian referees were effectively told to mind their language when their national association told them they had to brush their English. The president of the Brazilian National Referees’ Commission, Armando Marques on Tuesday said the country’s men in the middle needed to know more English than just general footballing expressions.

Marques, arespected referee in the 1960s and 1970s, said FIFA would soon ask federations to present only English-speaking referees for major tournaments and warned that those whose linguistic capabilities fell short were unlikely to be selected.

Tax hacks raid Becker’s locations
MUNICH: German investigators have raided about 30 locations linked to tennis star Boris Becker on suspicion that he evaded taxes on millions of dollars in earnings, a newspaper report has said.

The agents searched offices and apartments of Becker’s friends and sponsors on Monday, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung said. Becker and his former manager Ion Tiriac are suspected of evading taxes on millions of dollars of Becker’s earnings from 1990 to 1993.
