CHANDIGARH, March 10: With the arrest of a Nurpur Bedi resident last evening, the city police have busted a gang of cheats who specialised in defrauding grocery shops. The gang had been operating here for the past few months.
Police sources said that Sector 8 shopkeepers apprehended Suman and handed him over to the police. Two others are at large.
Explaining the gang8217;s modus operandi, the police added that the three would place an order with a provision store and instruct the shop to deliver it to a particular house. The gang would be waiting at the specified house for the delivery man and would send him away on one pretext or another without paying him. On one occasion they told the delivery man to come from the back door to take the payment, another time they sent him back saying he has not brought one of the items asked for. By the time the delivery man would return, the three would have disappeared.
Yesterday they went to a shop in Sector 8 and placed an order. The shopkeeper, who was aware that others had been cheated recently, got suspicious. He called the house number where delivery was to be made and discovered that they had placed no order. The three men ran away but the shopkeeper and a few others chased them and caught Gopal Suman.
The police have registered a case of impersonation and cheating under Section 419 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code.
